Ambient Gas Measurement

Ambient Gas Measurement

It is very difficult and dangerous to continue working activities in mines, sewers and tunnels. At the same time, the ambient air in such indoor or semi-enclosed areas, which have very different structures compared to other working environments, is quite different. There are atmospheric and physical threats waiting for employees in such areas.

While the quality of the breathing air poses a significant danger, it also creates different threats in the tools used in the work environment and in different situations encountered. It is extremely important to measure the gases in the environment in such closed areas and the measurement of gases is generally carried out in three stages.

First, the amount of oxygen in the environment should be measured. Tools that measure flammable gases must have oxygen in order to work correctly. If the oxygen level is low, these tools cannot give reliable results. Then, it is the detection of flammable gases and vapors in the working environment. Explosion or fire hazard is more vital than exposure to toxic gases. Another step is the measurement of toxic gases in the working environment.

In such environments, different scenarios may occur which may reduce the amount of oxygen. Certain reactions and poor aeration conditions caused by biological and chemical substances in the operating environment may result. If the amount of oxygen in the air is low, workers are directly affected and life-threatening situations may occur. Furthermore, since most toxic gases can be found in colorless and odorless form, it is very difficult to understand without testing.

Because of all these risk factors, it is necessary to test these environments for safety by using appropriate measurement and observation tools. But gases have volatile properties. Therefore, during sampling and analysis, methods and tools in accordance with standards should be used and procedures should be carried out very quickly.

When inspecting such environments, it must be done by experts and it should be determined whether it is risky for the employees or not and whether the employees have the necessary protective equipment. If an unsafe situation is detected, all necessary precautions should be taken immediately.

According to the provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Law, employers are obliged to protect employees from the dangers and harmful effects of working conditions. In order to ensure a safe working environment, it is obliged to carry out measurements, tests and analyzes of physical, chemical and biological factors for the working environment.
