Later, other organizations published some standards on occupational health and safety. These standards basically used the BS 8800 standards, but their content and implementation were different. In order to eliminate all this confusion and to bind it to a single standard, a study was initiated with the participation of independent audit companies and certification bodies. The aim is to prepare an internationally accepted health and safety standard. At the end of the studies, the OHSAS 1999 Occupational Health and Safety Management System standard was revealed in 18001.

This standard, known as OHSAS 18001 and published by BSI, is not an ISO standard. In the years 2004 and 2007, this standard has undergone two revisions. Following the revision in 2007, the standards were further aligned with the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System and ISO 9001 Quality Management System standards.
