ISO 45001 Occupational Health and Safety Management System

ISO 45001 Occupational Health and Safety Management System

Advances in technology, increased production and competition greatly increase the dangers to the health and safety of employees. Especially 20, where industrialization and new production methods stand out. century; There has been a century in which deaths and limb losses have increased as a result of occupational accidents caused by intensive mechanization.

Occupational accidents are one of the most important problems for all sectors. It is a pity that despite the ease of technology and all the preventions, there are still thousands of work accidents per year and most of them can be fatal.

Unfortunately, our country is insufficient to implement these measures. Turkey in terms of the frequency of fatal accidents, 15 from the European Union countries has more than 7 times the average accident frequency. among the 10 countries examined, the frequency of fatal accidents in Turkey and Russia, then India is seen as the country with the highest frequency.

In this context, the main tasks that the employees working in the field of occupational health and safety will take to prevent occupational accidents and occupational diseases in working life are:

The construction sector comes first in occupational accidents resulting in a loss of life, with a large proportion around 40. The construction is followed by the mining and metal sector. With the efforts of governmental organizations and legal regulations, positive developments are experienced in occupational health and safety while new management systems and new standards are developed.

The biggest work on prevention of occupational accidents is ISO 45001 Occupational Health and Safety Management System standard. Preparations for this standard were initiated in April 2014 by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). The new standard will actually replace the current OHSAS 18001 standard.

In fact, the ISO 18001 Occupational Health and Safety Management System standard, which does not differ from the basic principles of OHSAS 45001, will provide a significant gain in preventing occupational accidents and preventing occupational diseases which have a great burden on the enterprises. This burden on both businesses and the country's economy emerges as insufficiency of personnel, losses due to early retirement and rising insurance premiums. The ISO 45001 standard provides a framework for businesses around the world to reduce workplace risks, increase employee safety and create more reliable working conditions, and includes requirements to reduce the burden on them.

At the same time, it follows system approaches such as ISO 9001 Quality Management System and ISO 14001 Environmental Management System, which are accepted all over the world, and the main structure of the ISO 45001 standard has been established in accordance with the structure called Annex SL, which forms the framework of all quality systems and consists of 10 items.

The OHSAS 18001 standard, which is currently applied, will lose its validity today when the ISO 45001 standard is published. For businesses with OHSAS 18001 certification, this document will continue to be valid for a while, but conversion to ISO 45001 will be required within a certain period of time.
