Expansion Tank Periodic Inspection

Expansion Tank Periodic Inspection

At least one expansion tank is used in each boiler room. It has become a standard part of both the heating system and the booster system. With the widespread use of natural gas today, the use of these tanks has increased rapidly. It is directly integrated into the product in vehicles such as floor heating.

Expansion tanks, also called membrane tanks, are used in heating systems to meet the volumetric change of the heated water. In sanitary installations, they are used to keep the static pressure generated by the pump at the level of use and to control the changes in the flow rate of water.

Expansion tanks are produced with balloon membrane and diaphragm membrane. In the diaphragm membrane tank, water comes into contact with the sheet. Diaphragm membrane tanks can only be used in closed circuit heating systems. Because only fresh water is taken into the system during the first operation. This water then remains in the system continuously. Oxygen in the water causes very little corrosion on radiators, boiler and tank walls. But when the oxygen is exhausted, the rust does not progress. If the diaphragm membrane tank is installed in the booster system, corrosion will be very fast and the tank will be called because the water will come to the tank continuously. Working principles of other tanks may be different.

Expansion tanks are described in the article entitled Pressure Vessels and Installations, issued by the Ministry of Labor and Social Security, in the Annex to the Regulation on Health and Safety in the Use of Work Equipment, Annex 3 Maintenance, Repair and Periodic Controls

Expansion tanks are also considered pressure vessels when they have internal pressure on the 0,5 bar and their periodic checks are mandatory. Periodic inspections of expansion tanks should be carried out by the Mechanical Engineer, Mechanical Technician or Mechanical Technician at least once a year. If NDT methods are preferred, controls may be performed by engineers, technicians or technicians with appropriate Non-Destructive Testing certificate.

In the case of the inspection of expansion tanks, checks shall be carried out taking into account the pressure equipment regulation, the portable pressure equipment regulation and the simple pressure bap regulation.
